What's Batik?
|
|
Batik is a wax resist process that is thousands of years old. Layers of wax and thickened dye are applied to white clothing to create the desired design. I use a tool called a tjanting to apply the wax. It has a spout where the hot wax flows out onto the fabric. When completed, a layer of wax goes over the design, and then the fabric goes into a dyebath. The wax crackles in the dyebath and creates fine lines throughout the design. These lines are a characteristic of batik.
